2011 Formula Junior

#9 by Klon , Sat Jan 08, 2011 12:46 am

It's a hot day with 32 degrees in Buenos Aires, home of the first round of Formula Junior, the first event of the motorsport season. Due to this, the event has quite a lot of prominent guests, such as the double champion Jake Sanson and two-times F1 world champion Marvin Duncan. But even VIPs and politicans such as the chairman of the South African NCOP Vuyani Immelman made the trip to the beautiful race track. "Circuito 15" is the variation of the track used for both the Argentinian Grand Prix of the seventies and this Formula Junior event. And speaking of South Africa, it is very likely he was quite happy with this event, because out of the eighteen drivers that took part in this gruesome qualifying, South African youngster Willow Syfret came on first place, beating his team mate. The best driver of the last season was Asuka Rugen in seventh position, almost a second behind the leader despite having two laps, whereas Willow's second lap was disturbed by a transmission failure.

Sprint Race, Buenos Aires

#10 by Klon , Sat Jan 08, 2011 2:59 pm

Despite a present threat of rain, the drivers are very motivated as the Sprint Race apporaches. Qualifying has been a close affair and so the only question remained: would the race itself be close as well or a boring Virgin 1-2? Well, let's make one thing very clearly: it did not fail to meet expectations. Syfret did not look too good and lost out heavily on the start, giving toom to Smith and Walewski who had a brilliant start. Smith vs. Walewski was the duel to come. The former CEO of Bugatti showed his age and patience in waiting for the right shot to attack, which came around the 13 minute mark, two laps before the race was done. A strong attack at the long straight gave him the lead, which he lost however shortly before the start-finish line, entering the final lap, where Walewski struck again and forced Zoey Smith behind him, who could not come back because Mark Stangassinger of Sauber became the biggest threat to the leading duo, only finishing four tenths behind the Virgin.

Qualifying - Main Race, Buenos Aires

#14 by Klon , Sun Jan 09, 2011 5:23 pm

Qualifying is always important, be it for the Sprint Race or the Main Race. However, this year it has become even more important with one point being given to the fastest lap of the Qualifying session. And once again Formula Junior shows its uniqueness with the top five being completely different from yesterday's qualifying. Of yesterday's top five, Dr. Mathias Walewski was the best and managed P6. Willow Syfret had two horrible runs and only got to P14, just beating Team New Zealand and Team Eisenberger who have been confirmed for having their last event this time around with Chevrolet and Porsche entering two works efforts. The only team which performance has not changed was Vemac, who still are consistent midfielders. But to get to the point, who did pole? Well, William Witney once had a movie named "Let 'Em Eat Smoke". Well, Yosef Jaao took that to heart and risked everything to win pole beating both Stylianos Stasanor and his own team mate Glenn Peters.

@DiamondStar: Sure, just create two cars for your teams and upload them somewhere (or send them to me per mail). If you want to have it easy, you can take the drivers of the two AI teams (Ngati Waikato, Manuel Gargini, Fritz Eisenberger and Tim Tagusen) or negotiate for new drivers.

Main Race, Buenos Aires

#16 by Klon , Mon Jan 10, 2011 12:17 am

The final part of the first racing event of the motorsport year 2011 commences when the Main race in Buenos Aires started. From the earlies minutes of this race it looked like Dr. Mathias Walewski with his brilliant starts was again the man to beat, gaining a clear advantage over his younger competitors. Stylianos Stasanor was the only one who barely could go the speed of the very light-fueled German. The part with being light-fueled came partially back to haunt Walewski though, because his team chose to have a very long middle stint which put pressure on the tires. And this costed Mathias dearly. After his pitstop on the last opportunity, he rejoined the track second behind the abovementioned Stasanor, who had fresher tires due to pitting differently and despite his fresh tires, the former buisnessman had no response and lost this seemingly assured victory. As a consolation price he can take one more point for the fastest lap with him. The final podium place was highly contested with four cars within two seconds at the end of this battle and noone but Willow Syfret managed to beat Polesetter Jaao, Rugen and Stangassinger to it.

Today, the Nürburgring Automotive GmbH announced a new change to the Formula Junior 2011 Sceduele. The return of the ADAC Eifelrennen has been confirmed, last being held in 2003 under Formula 3000 rules won by Gabriele Toccacello, who scored his first major win back then. In exchange for this Formula Junior-only event, the season finale will now be held in Indonesia together with Grand Prix World Championship.

Qualifying - Sprint Race, Brazil

#21 by Klon , Mon Feb 21, 2011 11:51 pm

After missing out the first event of the seasons, four teams have to prove their worth this time around. Out of all these teams Burns Racing proved to be the best effort. Will Johnson manages to take pole position. McQueen motorsports do not look too shady either. Lenny Sherry takes third on his Formula Junior comeback and has his partner Khalil Malek directly behind him. Despite the impressive new teams, the ones who took part in Argentina are there as well. And there are some shocking changes of fortunes here: the MG works team does improve most impressively on their performance in the Argentinian Main Race resulting in a second place for Yann Ramzy. Calling the Volkswagen result an improvement would mean that you failed to grasp the definition of improvement. Championship leader Dr. Mathias Walewski has dropped to 19th place, truly embarrassing for a man who scored an impressive point finish in Formula Two.

Sprint Race, Brazil

#22 by Klon , Tue Feb 22, 2011 12:11 am

After a hot and interesting qualifying session, this Sprint Race had the possibility of being extremely exciting. Unfortunately for us, it is not quite as thrilling as one could hope it would be. While we surely got to see some nice overtaking maneuvres, there was no fight at all for the win. After Jason Chaser took the lead after what may have been the best start of this year so far, nobody was able to challenge the Australian driver. This leads to a good win for MG Cars. The British team was surely happy to see this result and with Ramzy in fifth, the team could start challenging for the big one this year. Pole sitter Will Johnson was surprisingly comfortable with second place and Malek and Sherry are presumably told not to fight each other for the last spot on the podium. New team Villeneuve score points as well with Pjannick in eight, after an impressive comeback from P16, whereas ninth-placed Julien Ottenberger scores the first points for himself and Vemac Grand Prix.

Qualifying - Main Race, Brazil

#23 by Klon , Wed Feb 23, 2011 10:51 pm

"adaptiveness, noun (uncountable): The state or quality of being adaptive; capacity to adapt." - this is the definition of adaptiveness given by Wiktionary. Now the question is: why is the author talking about adaptiveness. Because this was the main story of the qualifying for the Main Race. Three drivers really impressed in this session by improving amazingly in the second session. While Themba in third "only" came from sixth place yesterday, he was the only one in the top four who had a single-digit starting place for the Sprint Race. Perhaps most impressive was Glenn Peters' recovery from 22nd place, last of the manufacturer-supported teams, being around a second faster than yesterday. But not less impressive was Dr. Mathias Walewski's storm from P19 to P2, also improving by over a second. Yosef Jaao on the other hand, did "only" get ten places but went fastest and will start from pole in this longer race, just like he did in Buenos Aires. Unfortunately, improvement like this comes at a price, namely by other drivers failing to be as good as they were in the first qualifying session. Prime example is Yann Ramzy, who had a horrible qualifying run and will start twenty-first on the grid. Another example is Vemac's own Van Rossem who drops eleven places and will have to work hard in the race. On a more amusing note, it seems like the McQueen drivers just cannot seem to split. But no matter the result, an exciting Main Race lies ahead of us.

Main Race, Brazil

#24 by Klon , Wed Feb 23, 2011 11:17 pm

Unlike yesterday's sprint race, this one kept its promise and turned out to be very close and exciting. A lot of overtaking excited the passionate Brazilian crowd despite lacking a true home hero. This time the start managed to proceed without half the cars being forced to a total stop. Walewski took what could have been a very helpful lead if he hadn't lost shortly after the end of the first lap. From then onwards, it became quite clear that Yosef Jaao could only be beaten by a crazy awesome performance. Especially after it turned out that the Doctor only had a light fuel load and had to pit extremely early compared to the Smoke Eaters. Their rather late stops made them able to take a 1-2 for a part of the race before Glenn Peters smashed his car in the wall. But Jaao went unchallenged at the front and build a sizeable lead while Walewskis early first stop costed him three more places, one of which he was able to take back after an exciting battle with Sprint Race winner Chaser. Will Johnson tried a very aggressive strategy to take both cars of Richard Burns Racing to the podium. Unfortunately for him, this did not work out and he ran out of fuel on the last lap, shortly before his final pitstop. Will was quite angry about this turn of events. Further down the order both Vemac Grand Prix cars scored points, which is ironic because Nicolaas had a much worse starting position this time around. Lola take their first points of the year while Sauber's streak of point finishes broke.
