Qualifying - Sprint Race, USA

#27 by Klon , Mon Apr 25, 2011 7:40 pm

We are in the sunny and beautiful town of Long Beach and Formula Junior continues. One team really felt the need to chance their fortunes. Vemac wanted more this time around and boy did they get it. After the dou has beaten Luc Pjannick and banished him to third place - a very impressive one though after his previous efforts - it was down to them. In an extremely close end, young German Julien Ottenberger managed to beat his team mate by three thousands of a second. It remains to be seen though wether the team can score their first win in Formula Junior especially with names like Yosef Jaao and Willow Syfret near to them.

Sprint Race, USA

#28 by Klon , Mon Apr 25, 2011 7:57 pm

Vemac Grand Prix were the favourites for a good result in Long Beach after scoring a 1-2 in qualifying conditions. The only question remaining was wether they could carry this performance over and become the heroes of Long Beach. In the shorter Sprint Race, the start would be helpful in answering this important question. Unfortunately, one of the Vemac cars started absolutely horrendous. Julien Ottenberger dropped down to eight place on the first lap. His partner Nicolaas Van Rossem was a lot better at that and took the lead his German team partner and buddy left over. Having this lead and a very well set-up car was enough for the rookie to defend strongly against Pjannick before starting an offensive of his own which secured him the win. Belgian fans are happy and Belgian fansites are already trying to write Van Rossem as a future Formula 1 champion. Aside from the disappointed Ottenberger who managed to fight his way back up to fourth, the first four cars finished in starting order. On the other hand there's fury at the back of the grid. A collision at the start between Asuka Rugen and Fritz Eisenberger left the latter out of the race and the former a lap down on the winner. Luke Speed truly felt ashamed after spinning out of the race in front of his home crowd.

Qualifying - Main Race, USA

#29 by Klon , Tue Apr 26, 2011 11:26 am

Vemac had the upper hand in the Sprint Race, the only question was wether they could take that performance and bring it again in the valueable Main Race. Despite dropping of by a few hundredths, they still looked good. Two drivers, however, were apparentely not happy with their Sprint Race efforts and took it to another level, Mark Stangassinger was the first to relegate them to the places behind him. Shortly before the session ended, however another star managed to rise. Khalil Malek, known as a driver of McQueen, showed a brilliant performance and managed to take pole position for the main race. Will Johnson must be very unhappy though, because he dropped a whole 14 places (despite only losing two tenths) and has to make up ground in the race itself. Yosef Jaao disappointed as well, only 15th place for the possible title contender. While we are at the topic of title contenders, Volkswagen BlueMotion Rookie Racing came back from their first race slump and will start in fifth and seventh.

Main Race, USA

#30 by Klon , Tue Apr 26, 2011 2:29 pm

The entire coast of the USA is hyped up for 40 minutes of Formula Junior and with many favourites for a possible win, it could only become very exciting. Nobody could be sure who would win this one, especially since two rounds of pitstops would throw the field in turmoil. Could Vemac continue their unstoppable run or would pole sitter Khalil Malek prove to be their undoing? Many exciting scenes, all together way to long to end up in this report, later we knew who would be the three heroes on the podium. Did I say heroes? I really should correct myself then: heroes and heroines. After all, young Asuka Rugen, last year's title contender, finally broke through her streak of bad luck in 2011 to score her first win of this season. Behind her were an extremely impressive Stylianos Stasanor, who came back from thirteenth on the grid to finish for 12 points and Lenny Sherry who also improved his position from qualifying a lot.
